Football: Green put on five-star Vase show

Friday, November 14, 2008, 09:00

GREEN produced an emphatic victory against Eccleshall AFC to book their place in the next round of the Staffs FA Vase competition.

From the whistle, Green carried the game to their opponents and should have taken the lead as early as the 10th minute when James Brough volleyed Adam Sawyers' cross over the bar when well placed.

But the early miss was the only blemish on an otherwise imperious performance from the youngster who played a part in all five goals.

Green went ahead after 15 minutes, when Brough played the ball into the feet of Godfrey Johnson on the edge of the penalty area.

With only one defender to beat, Johnson skipped past his man before unleashing a thunderbolt which flew past keeper Phil Bruce into the top corner.

Green continued to press and struck their second after 25 minutes with another well-worked move. Good work down the left by Adam Sawyer saw the ball played inside to Brough, who returned a neat pass which found the run of Sawyer. He neatly side-stepped the keeper before firing into an empty net.

Green finished off arguably their best half of football this season with a third goal just before the interval.

Good work down the left between Dan Rooksby and Paul Callear culminated in Brough delivering a low driven cross into the six-yard box for Darren Baker to score.

The second half followed a similar pattern.

Green remained well in control, although Eccleshall showed some glimpses of their attacking intent which meant the defensive trio of Sam Pettitt, Drew Bennett and Lee Horton needed to remain on their guard.

The match was effectively ended as a contest with a brilliantly-constructed goal. Rooksby delivered a deep cross to the far post for Johnson, who showed great awareness with a cushioned volley inside to Brough who finished from close range.

Green's final goal came on 75 minutes. Another well-crafted move between Green's striking duo of Johnson and Sawyer saw Johnson paralyse the Eccleshall defence with his electric pace before releasing Sawyer who found the corner of the net from 18 yards.

This Saturday, Green visit Congleton Athletic in the League Cup (1.30pm).
